Are the level names arbitrary? Why arent skulls called skulls? The cleaning guy at the university says "slime" (afaik), but we say "goo", Why?

The developers of the game have actual names for each and every room built right into the code, but a lot of the time I actually have to look up what room someone is referring to, or even what I’m trying to refer to. So there’s no right or wrong. The actual names just help get the specifics down but if you have a clear enough description of a room you’re talking about, that works too.
