Doing runs on CTGP

Runs on CTGP are allowed and people have been doing them for a while now. CTGP is nice because we can ensure players are loading from disc, not using Gecko codes, and Wii U players can now use GameCube controllers via the USB adapter. Here are the required settings just to be clear what is/isn't allowed.

  • Custom Tracks: OFF
  • Remove Game Music?: NO
  • 'My Stuff' Folder: OFF
  • Save game on SD card?: NO
  • Special Fonts: OFF
  • SD Compatible Mode: OFF
  • Item Rain (Offline): OFF
  • All Items Can Land (Offline): OFF
  • Menu Transition Speed: Normal

USB GC mode is allowed.

  • Ultra shortcuts are patched on CTGP versus mode, so don't use it for "Skips" categories.
  • CTGP may have increased load times over vanilla MKWii, so don't use it for RTA-based runs (100%).

This post is great because it answers some questions. Thanks for clarifying this, Charlie :)

Will players have to show the rules in the video?

Considering that the meaningful settings are visible within the game, and the settings are set before boot, I'm gonna say you don't need to show CTGP settings before a run in a video. It would just be a huge hassle.

*An update regarding the USB GameCube controller adapter patch introduced in CTGP 1.03.1062 that I had posted in our Discord: *

After some testing, it seems that using the USB GameCube feature saves about .6 seconds per track load. You can tell if this feature is enabled when CTGP says USB GC ON in the bottom right when launching the game.

This is really disappointing because this feature was promising for a lot of players. If the leaderboards were IGT right now, I'd allow it. But for now, I'm going to put a hold on using this feature for runs until the IGT switch. This feature will be permanently banned for 100% runs unless a fix is released.

Why not just apply a 0.6 second penalty per track load for USB GC and let people use what they like?

There's no reason to do ctgp regular speedruns for this game bc the loading times just put u at a high disadvantage compared to just vanilla where they are minimal.

That's very disappointing cause I only have USB GameCube and nothing else. Can there be a way that we can have us subtract the .6 load save and have our runs allowed?

Or have a separate category for the people who use USB GameCube?

But remove game music doesn’t affect the game at all. How come I have to turn that off for speed runs?

European Union

Because its game modification and has been banned from time trials (the significantly more popular form of mkw speedrunning) since 2008. It makes sense to keep the rules consistent.

Why don't we make a separate game for CTGP? It wouldn't make sense to make a category, especially with the item rain and 200cc categories being there already.

There already is a separate game for CTGP.

Updated the main post to allow USB GC mode, since recent reports indicate CTGP has higher load times than vanilla, and the IGT switch will nullify the small advantage it gave.

can we please allow instant menu nav?? it gives no advantage in igt-based runs and is a HUUUUGE qualty of life improvement. thx !! c:

@cowmaam I updated the Item Rain and 200cc category rules to allow an exception for fast menu transitions. They are CTGP exclusive IGT-timed categories, so I see no reason not to allow it for them.

awesome tysm !! i must've missed that when submitting my recent run. thx !!
