5-life code -- Was this ever discussed in the rules?

Earlier, I was watching a runner use the 5-life code, and I told him the run probably won't be accepted with the code. I assumed as much, since this had been the case for decades.

But he told me something that shocked me. "The rules don't say that." - I had to go check, and he's right.

I just want to make sure if we're in agreement. Is the 5-life code actually banned, or merely frowned upon?

I mean it IS a cheat, but then again, allowing this would maybe get more runners to start learning/playing the game.

I don't playt his game. But definitely that is not allowed. I don't know if you guys accepted it in a run. That is the case in Turtle 3. Extra lifes are not allowed

Hi folks, I'm looking at trying to do a run of this and am curious if an official moderator ruling has been made on for Any % No Credits Warp for:

  • 5-life code allowed/not allowed

  • Continues allowed/not allowed

Right now the rules still only state 'SDA Timing: Starts when you gain control of the toad in level 1 and ends when you lose control after the Dark Queen fight (when the game cuts to Professor T. Bird's final dialogue). The wrong warp to the credits is not allowed.'

From the rules, it would appear both 5-life code and continues would be allowed?

I think (5-life code not allowed) (Continues allowed)

Thanks Negativ4k! I see that from above, I'm just looking for an active SRC moderator to chime in and confirm or disagree (because they're the ones who would be approving runs).

Looking at the current board, it looks like there are actually precedent runs that have already been accepted using the 5-life code? So it seems like both 5-life and continues should be allowed then, correct?

Sorry guys, I didn't notice about 5 lives. My bad. Well, it's forbidden to use any codes in the game. It's the basic rule in speedruns. I had to deny these runs unfortunatelly despite of your great runs :(

Aww man since it appears 5-life code using runs are getting rejected / scrubbed from the leaderboard, can I suggest the rules be modified to specify that the 5-life code is definitively not allowed?

I've updated the rules. Sorry, usually it's obvious to not use any cheat codes in the runs. I think most of the people know about that and it's really strange that it's not prohibited in main NES rules here https://goo.gl/pYN6AR . Maybe because each game is different and cheat codes are allowed in some specific games. And it can't be allowed because it would be unfair for most of the runs which use a bike glitch. Because it will be much easier when you die and continue after a death. For expample in arctic caverns stage.

It seems silly to hold people to rules that were not in place at the times the runs were submitted.

I think if you update these rules it should be implemented for runs from that point forward.

You can’t punish speedrunners that have to wait months for their runs to be approved by changing the rules months after they have submitted runs.

In every category the rules are clearly posted, however this included game feature was not mentioned.

I will repeat why I made this decision. No one has ever used this code in the runs. If you want this code to be used, create a vote among the community so everyone can decide. I am now the only one active moderator in this game and therefore cannot decide for everyone. But if we allow this code, it will radically change the approach to speedrunning in this game. So that's why I declined it. If I'm wrong, I can stop moderating and let other people do it

If you notice an error in checking a particular moderator, you can always write to him in a personal message or open a topic on the forum. Or is it difficult for you to figure this out? Blaming a person for not paying attention to this is a little wrong. Moreover, he said that he is the only active moderator.

Also, the rule of cheat codes to increase lives is indeed prohibited in 99% of games. Even if it is not stated in the rules.

Hi all. First of all to WorstLiarEver, I'm sorry about this. It wasn't made clear to you, and we're just now realizing that today's conventional standards aren't the same as before. Back when this leaderboard was first put up, it was clear to everyone that cheat codes are not generally accepted in speedruns. As of recent, this isn't as clear anymore. We'll put it in the rules to make it clear.

As for reinstating your run, I'm afraid I can't agree to do that for one very unlucky reason. At the end of your run, the dark queen took enough lives from you that you reached 1 life heart remaining, which is just barely past the game over threshold of a no-code run. Had it been 2, I would have petitioned in favor of bringing it back with a mod note explaining the exception on your run. I know that is a tough break, but if it means anything, I know you can easily do it again without the code if you're willing.

Ukionik, thank you for keeping up with submitted runs. I didn't realize it was just you holding this up until now. Please keep moderating, you're doing great work here.
