My opinion on allowed "tech"

This is coming from several "techs" that have been talked about in the discord as I have been lurking. (Such as skips, movement tech, etc.) The statement of "it's minor" or "if it becomes a problem we will change it" has been popping up a lot a feels like it's gonna go down a murky road and putting off problems for later when it's only going to get crazier.

Generally speaking I feel like at this point in the games life cycle it is better to be overly stringent on anything that is "close", debatable, minor, overlook-able, or situational should be given the doubt until it is proven repeatable and consistent within games intended (key part) mechanics.

Once they have been ironed out with updates it will be more fair to allow certain "tech". Right now glitchless feels like "how much can I get away with" and really undermines the competitive credibility early on. Routes, paths, strains, purchases, Rng etc. should make the runs in my opinion.

I am still willing to argue that the any% prologue glitchless category is already tainted as every run includes a clip through two walls. With new people coming in it is extremely demoralising that all speed runs include this and leaves the feeling of "okay then what actually Is allowed" where does that grey area end. Are all records going to just keep getting wiped? Even though it is "minor" that is still a glitch it is not a clean run. While it's cool, how is that competitive?? There is no world where you are at an advantage by not doing it. The only other option is going through the door which will always be slower. At this point that is a required path to take to even think about putting up a time... Through a wall...

People have done incredible work so far from discoveries, methods, moderating, running etc. so I don't want to discredit that but feels like everything is on eggshells whether it is acceptable or not. And right now it appeared there are two categories either some glitches or abusing all possible glitches.

Like someone said in DC (don't want to name without their approval) it's a slippery slope if allowed people will macro or abuse. I feel like keeping the restraints on early is wayyyy better for integrity.

That's just my two cents.

I haven't personally posted any runs, made discoveries, or provided contributions other than my offhand opinions. So take it as you want but I came in wanting to participate and am a bit put off wanting to try because it is so blurry right now. I understand the amount of work and appreciate it, that's why I want to share thoughts so it succeeds as it should and y'all deserve.

Its a tricky topic and you make great points. Everyone defines glitches differently and has different thoughts on what's a game mechanic and should or shouldn't be allowed. I'll try to keep this short but better explain my reasoning for why things are the way they are.

The statement of "it's minor" or "if it becomes a problem we will change it" has been popping up a lot a feels like it's gonna go down a murky road and putting off problems for later when it's only going to get crazier

When I say minor I don't mean not a big deal, but that it has little impact on a run, and if changed now would just cause the problem we were waiting for. Prologue store for example is to easy to accidently clip through the walls even a little bit. If it were banned from glitchless then any run where you do so even slightly would mean a reset. and would be annoying. Its not hard to do and is hardly a glitch in my eyes. I don't see how a new runner learning the route would have difficulties with it or question why its allowed.

As for double jumps its the same thing. (however I realize my decision on triple+ jumps was foolish and I will be taking it back)

Continuing from that,

Are all records going to just keep getting wiped?... ...While it's cool, how is that competitive??

No records have been wiped or ever will be wiped, just moved to the category it best belongs in after changes happen. As for competitiveness it shouldn't have any impact at all. Everyone is trying to get the fastest time and just because you remove a step in that process, it doesn't change the end goal. Whatever rules may be in place everyone is in the same boat. Routes, money/xp strats, and RNG are still a big part in the longer runs where there needed, with or without glitches, but prologue is just a short run and doesn't have that

And right now it appeared there are two categories either some glitches or abusing all possible glitches

This is the best way to have it in my opinion. You mention grey areas for new folks learning the games runs. Having just 2 categories and deciding the rules for each is less confusing than 3 or 4. I want to refrain from adding such categories like no major glitches.

Nobody is right or wrong, its just about agreeing on what belongs where as a community. There wasn't originally going to be a separation of glitch/ed categories but I decided to do so in case it was needed later. From now on anything newly discovered will go through a poll to see where it stands. As said in the news post I'm working on making everything easier to understand via the game rules to get rid of that confusion for new runners. DM me if you have questions, or I can go into more detail if you'd like as well.

Very much agree, the sooner we get the polls the better, the triple jump in particular.
