It's really tough for me to decide which categories we should add honestly, a lot of people want quite a few different categories. We're filling up in the categories department (if you haven't noticed already) and really can't accept all of these. I think the original plan was to add a second 40 Tracks category and add the 48 tracks category (along with the Crossing Cup and Bell Cup categories). If you guys instead want to scrap 40 tracks and have just 48 Tracks, that's okay too. A DLC Tracks category is a good idea too. But with so much room taken up already by the other categories, I doubt we can fit everything. So what do you think? Should we scrap some categories to make room for new ones? Should we only add some new ones but not others?
Please reply to this thread telling me which categories you'd like added, which categories shouldn't be added, and which categories should be removed (if any). Thanks!
Here is how I feel we should do the categories. Nitro Cups (I, 150) Retro Cups (I, 150) DLC Cups (I, 150) Core 32 Tracks (I/NI 150/200) 48 Tracks (I/NI 150/200)
I'll leave the cups discussion to the cups runners.
This will give us 11 categories and gives a fair mix of in game content. I'm not sure 200cc should be applied to every category but that can be disputed.
Put variables for the 40 tracks. Have 1 be DLC Pack 1 and have another be DLC Pack 2. DLC Tracks should be a thing. Even if there is a high demand for 200cc, put 200cc into Individual Levels
In responce to the 40 track thing, I personally don't see a need for it post DLC 2. It was meant to be the category for a) those who wish to run every track, and b) a place holder until DLC2 dropped. Now after DLC 2 drops it will have both of it's needs removed.
Also I can only imagine that "quite a few categories" thing King said in the opening post refers to people wanting any number of way of making a category 40 tracks. Think about it there will be people who will want 40 tracks to be Star Cup and up, or Full Nitro, Banana, Lightning and full DLC. It has the possibility for too many iterations in my opinion and I feel as it now will have no use after the arrival of DLC 2.
I agree with you for the most part Dan, but the biggest problem is seeing if people are okay with their runs for the 40 Tracks category being removed. Any opinions on Dan's post would be highly appreciated.
Honestly, it might be best to shift everything over to the IL table. Give every category (4/16/32/40/48 Track) its own section for the sub-categories (I/NI,150/200).
Regardless of demand, it seems odd to leave out 200cc when it's faster.
imo the current categories are fine except that I would completely remove 40 tracks categories and substitute them with the 48 tracks categories. Yeah I'm fine with the removal of my times since they're bad anyway. About 200cc, I don't see why it should be included when 100 and 50 aren't. It would make no sense. At max I can see a 200cc 32 tracks and 48 tracks in the misc categories but nothing more than that.
50cc and 100cc are left out because 150cc is faster and speedruns are about speed. 200cc is faster than 150cc so it should be included.
So here's the general consensus so far: -Remove the 40 Tracks categories and replace them with 48 Tracks -Add 200cc
I'll be adding 200cc as a variable to all categories. I'll also be editing all runs currently on the leaderboard to 150cc (that'll be fun lol).
Also, as a reminder, 48 Tracks, Crossing and Bell Cups, and 200cc runs will not be accepted until the 23rd.
Thanks everyone for your support and feedback! :D
Would running 200cc cups be allowed on VS mode? I can't seem to get it in GP.
Yes, simply change the cc setting from 150 to 200.
What about having single Cups in the Individual Levels? We could have different categories like "150cc", "200cc", "150cc No items" and "200cc No Items".

Although this isn't too bad an idea it wouldn't really make too much sense in terms of what a level is. A "level" is synonymous with a course or track in Mario Kart, so putting a 4-level run in an individual level chart makes little sense. Also, people always seem to forget that myself and the other moderators try to keep each game's leaderboard as consistent as possible. Having this game be the only one out of the eight with cup runs as individual levels breaks that consistency.
I dunno if you saw it in the speedrun.com irc. but they are making improvements to the variable system, I dunno how it worked before, but i feel like this would make 200cc/150cc work better.
Thanks for posting this! I'll be sure to fiddle with the settings :P
