Version differences

Does anyone know if there is a difference between versions? My main concern is that some versions have different handling, thus giving advantage (kinda like NFSIII PC vs PSX). I only played PC version.

Same, i cant say if theres a difference between the different versions, i can maybe do some framerate testing or something and see if there is any noticeable difference

Edit: After playing some of the more technical track with the Diablo for a little bit (mainly coastal as it has a lot of tight turns), i ¤personally¤ couldnt really tell a difference, i felt like the cars handled the same. But that was only after 10 mins, i will most likely go more indepth later

Usually console and computer versions aren't exactly 1:1 accurate (code modified for different hardware), especially when it comes to older games. Depends a lot on a specific game though, how much of a difference there actually is. Many MS-DOS games don't have a speed cap, so only CPU speed determines how fast the game can run (for example: Bullfrog's Magic Carpet engine also used in Hi-Octane). Something to consider when using RTA timing with such games. This game however is capped with a timer.

Yeah, tournament and knockout modes will most likely have some real-time difference. I think we shouldn't split the platforms yet, especially since noone actually made such run, unless someone proves there is a difference in gameplay.

Let's just keep this open for discussion, if this game becomes more popular.

which video @JessicaSix?

Doesn't matter, PC version really has these options. I wonder how they affect car handling.

Whats interesting is that not all cars have this option for Abs and traction control.

Some cars have it only as N/A and are unchangeable

As for the psx version, i couldnt find anything related to Abs or traction control in either the options or in the car selection menu

Because not all real cars have these assists :) Remember, NFS1 was sort of a simulator.

The question is if it actually makes the car go faster. If not, I see no point of creating separate leaderboards yet.

Ill do a speedtest in the morning with a car that has both ABS and traction control and see if there is a speed difference and i will also do the same with the psx version.

There's also 3DO and Saturn versions, but probably only 3DO version is worth testing.

After doing some tests with the Corvette ZR-1, The car hit the same top speed regardless of version and if abs/traction were on or off. They all hit 177Mph (well, psx hit 176 but i put that down as margin of error)

Also the 3do version has the ABS and traction control options as well, but for the life of me couldnt figure out how to change my car lol

For the psx copy i cant find anything related to ABS or Traction control at all. not in the options or the car selection, i have checked everything i can and i dont see anything so i am saying that no, they are not there on the psx

As for the SE tracks, i will be able to confirm at a later time as i havent gotten around to doing a full tournament yet, only partially to find the best cars

I have planned to do it tomorrow as im not supposed to be doing anything, ill check then

Yeah, we will probably create "Tournament - PC", "Tournament - PSX" categories, just like in many other games.

well well well. What do we have here? Looks like some drivers that want to take a turn at the wheel in some classics.

Excellent! For the record, I have The Need for Speed SE running in a virtual guest box running windows me, being hosted by my windows 7 PC. I also have been able to get Over Drivin' GT-R on a Saturn emulator running.

Now the bad news, my super NFS gaming box is in storage, as I just moved from CT to AZ and have yet to sell my old home and purchase a new one here in AZ where I can setup my NFS gaming box. :(

I'tll be some months before that all passes, but I just wanted to drop a line and say WOW, I am glad to hear that a few are STILL able to play The Need for Speed. oh, and here is my vid from a way back.

Peace.

Japan

I have this game for 3DO, but I have no idea what the "Tournament" here is supposed to be.

There's only three courses to race on, and the only thing to do is either race for time or race against the "X-Man".

Do we need a separate category for 3DO?

Slovakia

Once someone submits a 3DO run, we will do a separate category.

I wanted to post a 3DO run using emulator, but saw in the rules that it's not allowed. Why is that? I didn't use any kind of speed up cheat or whatever that makes it for me easier to go through all of the races faster, so it's kinda weird to me that it isn't allowed.

Bulgaria

I'm pretty sure the reason why it isn't generally allowed is due to 3DO emulation being fairly poor and furthermore, the 3DO's performance as a whole being quite poor. Due to the differences between the 3DO version and the rest of them, it'd be best to separate it and make a page dedicated to it. We haven't done that yet due to more or less noone running it on 3DO and me never getting around to actually do a proper run.
