In game leaderboards do it fine for bosses and boss rush tbh. Those are what we've always used.

I'd like to submit a request to be a moderator for the game. At this point in time it does not appear that Codmw3man or Hana come to this site all too often, and we're at 7 runners now. My last couple submissions took multiple weeks to be posted and my current one is in limbo after 9 days (which I have since beaten by a few minutes).

Just asking because I come to this site at least every few days so I can account for any new submissions quicker and have a run here (thus far my PB is 46:14, though that has yet to be submitted).

Here are some changes to the route that have made this run significantly faster (at the moment Gerrick has around a 42:40 time, 7 minutes faster than Hana's long standing record). Many of them were found by him, a couple found by me.

The changes from the existing route:

-To begin with, this game reads input from both a controller and a keyboard at the same time, allowing text to be mashed at a ridiculous speed if both buttons are rapidly pressed in an alternating rhythm. This speeds up several mashing cutscenes throughout the run, and certain fights are quicker to mash through now rather than use abilities.

-The ability Brave Wind is no longer used nearly as extensively. after Ape Princess, we basically just use sharpen and spam Multistrike for most bosses. Likewise, Combo Master is not as essential to the final fight, though it is preference.

-We've added some weapons to the route. In Providence shop (Before the Spaceship), we pick up a sword for Cthulhu and Sharpe, which allows them to clear bosses safer and several turns quicker. Sometimes it's also good to pick up Cthulhu's Sword in R'lyeh early on, if you are unlucky enough to lack the money to buy the Sword in Providence (which you should typically have enough for).

Likewise, the Volcanic Tome in the Volcano is useful for October's Magic (and it's not that far out of the way). In Innsmouth shop, we pick up the best sword for Sharpe, which again makes the final few bosses much quicker and safer.

Lastly, in the first screen of the Spaceship, we pick up a Trident for Umi, which increases her Agility (and her Str for Pawz too), allowing her to escape from fights earlier. It's like a 8-10 second detour and saves potentially up to a second from every encounter, so it's worth it.

-Finally, we cleared up a few more optimal movement paths in dungeons. You can watch Gerricks or my current PBs (mine is a 47:47 with plenty of room for improvement), I use some of his and some older ones.

There's still some room for optimization but an amazing run could likely reach 41:XX.

Is 72 hours just "Minimize number of loads until The Facts then do that as fast as possible"? Kinda curious at this point, considering the link to the VOD of the run doesn't work :\

California, USAGhostKumo7 years ago

By all means, submit a run, whether it be from Youtube, Twitch, Hitbox, etc. Emulators are fine, not enough people have a DS capture to really get picky about that.

And if you find any tech feel free to bring it up here.

If you want to run something, by all means go for it. But for a game with no % counter, I'm not going to just add a 100% category without there first being some community input on exactly what 100% means, and outside of that I have no intention of adding any other categories unless A: multiple people start running them and B: They aren't just "meme" categories but rather have additional meaning to them.

California, USAGhostKumo7 years ago

I'd ¤consider¤ adding it as a Misc category after someone actually did a run, and if more than one person posted a run of it I definitely would, if not move it to a main category, as I feel that people should run a category before putting it on the leaderboard, not run a category >because< it's on the leaderboard.

To start with: I don't feel like adding new categories just for the sake of adding new categories without meaningful differences. While 100% for this game would have at least some meaningful difference from 100 Slime, you would first need to define what 100% is. Every game has a different 100%, and some don't do everything possible anyways: FFVI is all Espers and Party Members, Chrono Trigger is all End of Time Sidequests, and even Banjo Kazooie 100% doesn't do all of the puzzles.

The things you can get in Rocket Slime are:

-All 100 Slimes -Open Every Letter -Hero's Well -All Crew Members -All Gold Statues -S rank Tank Master -Canvases -At least one of every item -All Recipes -All Yggdrasil Seeds -All Tank Battles -Hooly Paper

100 Slimes and All Crew Members is certainly going to be on 100%, but from there it gets iffy. Do we need to open every letter? Not really. I don't think all Gold Statues really makes the run or route more meaningful because it just means you get 100 of every enemy instead of 30, and at lot of time will be spent/lost hunting Goodybags. I like all recipes and all Yggdrasil seeds because those provide visible, tangible unlockables in your menu, along with every type of ammo being obtained at least once. All Tank Master battles makes sense to me, but all Tank Battles really doesn't, especially the ones from the codes. I also don't think getting Hooly's test paper marked "0%" really does anything for the game either.

So personally I would say "100%" should be: 100 Slimes, All Crew Members, All Recipes, All Yggdrasil Seeds/Max HP, One of every Item, Max rank at the Tank Master, Hero's Well. You might say it's not 100% then, but really nobody wants to call it 100SACMARAYSAIATMHW.

I may moderate the game, but I'm not the only one who should have a say in this, and this is just my opinion on what should and shouldn't be considered for 100%, it's really a grey area for games without percentage counters.

Well where do you define all collectibles? There are multiples of Celcetan Panaceas and if you start saying all chests, many just have SP in them.

The problem with 100% regarding its arbitrariness is "At what point does adding more things to a 100% category stop giving it any additional meaning as a run?" Honestly, all chests sounds silly for that reason. I think something more like "All Bosses All Roos All Equipment" would be better since most of the items are just stuff you find here and there and there's no real meaningful change to grabbing the celcetan panacea or the keys to doors you don't need to open, especially when some of them would be faster to clip through even if you had the key (on Toal).

Because of the sketchiness of how emulation works, I can't post links on how to distribute/obtain ROMs here, but most people just use DesMuMe or another DS emulator for purposes of emulating DS. Alas I can't really help on getting that set up. Also DS emulation is tough on the computer and requires decent specs, especially if you're recording, so if you have an older or weaker computer you may experience other issues.

For DS capture, I got mine from here: http://3dscapture.com/ds/ . It cost 53$ for the card which you would have to install yourself, 75$ to have it installed to your DS (I believe you need an original model, I dont think you can use this for a DSlite), or 135$ to get a DS with it pre-installed sent to you. This site ( 3dscapture.com ) also has a place to order a 3DS capture which allows you to get a capture card installed to a 3DS or a 2DS, which is a bit more expensive but allows you to record both DS and 3DS games.

For recording purposes or streaming purposes, OBS (Open Broadcast Software) is the best. There's tons of resources out there for on how to use the software through a quick google search.

Awesome to see someone make changes to the route.

a few comments:

-I did a test of how long it takes to save a Slime at Forewood, it was something like 2 min 55 sec to do with all the movement and cutscenes that get added for going there a third time. Generally the tank battle in Tootinschleiman's tomb only takes about 2min to 2min 30sec (RNG), and even if it was a slight time loss it's made up for by the Broadsword. That's what led me to determine it was faster. Feel free to time it though, it's been awhile since I did that and I can't 100% vouch for its accuracy.

-Far as language goes, I believe he does the same in Japanese so really it's an extremely slight advantage. Because of the way text scrolls, the game basically having the same number of text boxes, and the lack of glitches I believe the two versions are currently identical in terms of speed. The main reason I do it on English is for streaming purposes at this point.

-You've got a point regarding the extra Krakatroda chests right after the first Slime Knight, those shurikens aren't a big deal (player ammo isn't really a big deal) and that extra slime knight can be grabbed in Callmigh if you roll with a 3 slime knight setup. Not sure why I didnt think of it. I'll add that in.

-Hitting Bough Beater the way I do hits him about as often as his I-frames will let him be hit, so I don't think it matters how you do it.

-Definitely don't need to go out of my way for more chests, now that you mention it. I go out of the way for a few too many.

Also the notes are nicely revised for clarity and more clear advice. Also the barrier forks, thank you I should have added those way earlier.

Here's a few concerns as a viewer, though bear in mind I have not been an "avid viewer" thus far, and there are a few things that have been improving over the course of the stream, which I imagine that you guys do know about.

Schedule. If FFXIII was not originally on the schedule, and that being an 8 hour run, it sounds like going forward there should be more preparation for schedule issues (e.g. more backup games and organizing it better). It seems there has been a number of schedule issues that need to be addressed, especially if the internet has been an issue.

Sustainability. No donations are being taken in, and the channel doesn't have a sub button, suggesting that the money to finance this is mostly coming in from attendance fees. Which is fine, I'm just wondering if this is something that could reasonably be funded for again. Now I'm not going to worry too much about the business side of these things. I'll leave the organizers to be worried about that more than me, money is complicated, just something to keep in mind because I know these things can get messy when money is involved. Especially if you don't use this venue again.

Better channel description. There's been a typo down there for days now and it's pretty bland just having a bunch of banners.

Note that this is for any%. It's not a comprehensive guide, but if anyone wants to pick this game up, this is most of what I've learned thus far. I still have a long way to go in routing though.
