I've noticed there are no rules for this game. Are there any plans to post some for those interested in the speedrun?
I am considering to start running this game. I think the rules need to be better defined. It also honestly should not be using the DLC outfits/weapons that make you far stronger at the beginning.
I am really sorry i never noticed this thread. Back when i was speedrunning this game i just tried to adjust to Silvius78's speedrun. I was occasionally looking for notifications but not even once i noticed there is a thread in this forum. I will try to make some rules based on previous speedruns for future speedrunners to come. I know it is late but better now then never. Im open for any suggestions and questions.
Edit: I made some basic rules including the allowance of DLC outfits and weapons because there wouldn't be a single speedrun without DLC outfits yet. Those rules aren't set in stone and i am willing to create new subcategories if someone wants to run the game in a different way (for example another ending).
@Kerngesund myself and another runner who current run the NieR games were recently looking into getting involved with the Drakengard games I've been looking at them myself for awhile and have recently been going through the game. I am the Series mod for NieR and I was the original Super for Automata During the first year, have moved on to allot of other stuff over the years and things are in good hands there now anyways.
Anyways my concern that was brought from a conversation I had with another interested runner is that DLC can still be allowed but should be a separate subcategory as most games would allow for base game runs excluding DLC because of the potential benefits it has and should be optional and not a requirement.
I have been working on IL runs and will be uploading them when I get my current upload net issues resolved. But I do plan to do runs of Any% and other categories some point soon I hope.
I would hopefully like to bring my knowledge to helping with the boards and maintaining it for new people to be able to pick up and submit for w.e it is they wish. I'd also like to discuss with the current Series mod and mods for the other games about trying to add NieR series as a sub-series or at least be willing to work closer together in making all these boards better for everyone and not off put by lack of or off putting rules and or lack of categories to even submit to.
I was planning to wait till after I get my net issues resolved to contact or even attempt to make a post about this but seeing as you have recently responded I would hope to discuss this with someone who has run the game already.
If you got any questions or would like to talk with me more I would love to work on this game as a start since I have more recent play experience with it and familiar with the DoD and NieR series as a whole since I'd been part of the General non-speedrun DoD/NieR community for the several years now and the start of Automata and before then NieR its self.
I do work on allot of games and teams that moderate boards so I can provide allot of my own experience over the years of doing so with multiple people in variety of communities. My end goal is to be able to run and submit games like anyone else in a community/board that is managed in respect with the people involved with the games be it mod or not. My stance on things is to have things make sense and be reasonable and still allow for flexibility to runners.
@MASH i would welcome the collaboration with you, the Nier community and the community of the other DoD games.
Regarding the DLC conversation i can fully agree with you and i would like to make new subcategories to give the runners more flexibility.
I never thought there was a serious interest in this game from other runners because i never received messages regarding this game and embarrassingly never noticed this thread.
I was more or less thrown into the position as a mod back then but i would like to improve this board and make it more easy for newcomers to get into running this game.
For future discussions i will contact you in Discord soon.
I look forward to discussing and working on the game(s) so that if there is or was interest from even more people that we can at least get things set up in a position where it's not lacking proper categories and rule sets that are not unfairly restrictive and still allow for change.
Regarding the dlc outfits and weapons since I do not currently have them but will at some point what are the benifts of outfits? Do they give traits or is it purely cosmetic because adding too many sub categories that can make things rather confusing and messy when trying to establish clear base line rules sets.
Weapons dlc is obvious enough to me from other games but I do want to see things kept simple and easy for everyone to understand and agree with.
I don't really wanna see changes made to the boards till proper discussion is had with both the current runners and interested runners so that we are not pushing anyone away.
There are benefits to the outfits: 5% more damage output, 5% less damage received, 20% more recovery from potions or no decrease of stamina during defense.
I don't intent to put anyone off by the changes. Those changes at the moment are just me trying stuff. These categories and subcategories will not be final. I also wan't to make a solution together with the current and interested runners.
I sent a friend request in discord to you so we can discuss more about the topic.
Between @Kerngesund myself and @DaleDukk we have been working on board changes and updates and clarifying and simplifying the existing rules to allow for other categories and still respect the existing runs. The following is the current purposed Rule sets:
General Rules • Video is required, Splits and Time on screen is optional. • Video must show from starting title screen till last cutscene of the run. • Timing is done RTA (Real Time Attack).
ANY% • Complete Branch A. • Time Stops after last hit as screen fades to Final Cut Scene. (When screen boarding appears)
B • Complete Branches A and B. • Time Stops after last hit as screen fades to Final Cut Scene. (When screen boarding appears)
C • Complete Branches A to C. • Time Stops after last hit as screen fades to Final Cut Scene. (When screen boarding appears)
All Branches • Complete all branches from A to D. • Time Stops after last hit as screen fades to Final Cut Scene. (When screen boarding appears)
New Game • Time Starts upon selecting and confirming "New Game" on a new file slot.
New Game+ • Played with a "Continued" existing file with required Chapters Unlocked. • Time Starts upon selecting "Chapter 0: Verse 1" and confirming "Mission Start".
No DLC • DLC Weapons and Outfits are not permitted to be used.
With DLC • DLC Weapons and Outfits are permitted to be used.
General Rules • Video is required, Splits and Time on screen is optional. • Video must show "Chapter Select" screen till "Mission Complete" screen. • Timing is done RTA (Real Time Attack). • Time Starts upon Selecting Mission and Confirming "Mission Start". • Time ends once screen begins to fade to "Mission Complete" Screen.
No DLC • DLC Weapons and Outfits are not permitted to be used.
With DLC • DLC Weapons and Outfits are permitted to be used.
Just to be clear for the NG+ No DLC category, I can use the Bloodstained Garb that you get for upgrading all the weapons right? It seems to allow for multiple chances at doing the weapon swap and infinite dashing glitches
You can use anything that you have obtained already in NG+. DLC is restricted to its own category. So long as it's not stuff obtain through DLC then you can use said items, weapons and or outfits in the No DLC category.
tbh its not official release of the game and they still have issues working to my knowledge as last gen console emus are not really on par with being fair use atm.
Not being an official release is a good point. I think allowing emulators but making them a separate category (or not really competitive with official PS3 runs) might be a good idea to make the run more approachable to newcomers since it would lower the barrier to entry. I know I don't have the hardware to record my PS3, but streaming an emulator is super easy. I don't think I'd be trying to run the game if I couldn't easily record and stream.
As for issues running the game, I did do a complete A run last night on an emulator, and I ran a practice A run 2 days ago. Here is the run I did yesterday on RPCS3. There were 3 real problems I had:
-
Controller input sometimes went reverse. I don't fully trust my bluetooth XB1S controller I got second hand, but the reversing input thing might be an emulator issue with xinput. This only happened a few times, and wasn't really a big problem.
-
The Three fight had an large amount of lag, and after beating Three I had a weird overlay burned in until the next cut scene (this was only graphical though). See 1:47:12.
-
Mikhail's fire attack sometimes did the animation but no fire came out and no damage was done. This was the only gameplay bug I noticed, and I'm not sure if it ever happened on my PS3.
Apart from those 3 things it was a good experience. Upscaling to 1440p made the game look better, and my loads were also way faster (but this is an issue for timing...). I was planning to redo this run (without my DLC mistake) today, so I'll see how the game continues to hold up.
So the issue I have with separating them even if that was the case would be more empty looking board.
The other thing is that there is nothing stopping you from doing it in emu, it just won't sit in the board with official version runs. Which is fair atm not that it couldn't change but there's just not enough interest or reason to do that atm.
That burn in thing happens sometimes when finishing off a boss with intoner mode and that fire thing doesn't work after a hard knockdown IIRC on actual hardware. If you want a cheap way to record on an actual PS3, you can use composite/S-video output and gvusb2 for $45USD~ which is what I do. You'd want it to be at a low resolution which apparently reduces the lag on actual hardware? I've apparently never played D3 at 720p or higher ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah after playing on actual hardware basically everything but the input inversion happened routinely. One of my first PS3 runs did have the house skip occur, so it might be worth looking into since it saved an easy 45 seconds at least. Anyone know of any leads on why this happens?
I....I dont know why I never thought of playing in lower res for better frame rate. Does that actually work? I've been streaming using a HDMI capture card and a handy hdmi splitter which strips HDCP, but boy the frame lag is way worse than the emulator. Though, since I beat my goal time in my last run I've been planning to play more on the emulator than the PS3.
Hello!! This past Tuesday 19th has been Drakengard 3's 10th anniversary!
