Brightening the screen

Hi all,

I'd like to get the community's feedback on whether modifying the color settings of the monitor / display driver is allowed. In particular, increasing the gamma setting of the display device can make seeing in the dark zones as easy as seeing in the non-dark zones.

Up for debate: Should changing the settings of your display device or monitor to make seeing in dark zones easier be allowed?

I am in favor. Here are the pros and cons in my mind:

Pros: Less risk of eye strain to runners. Runners with vision disabilities such as lack of night vision can still compete.

Con #1: Runners who have really good muscle memory / enjoy blindfolded runs and hence don't need to see in the dark zone will not be able to benefit from that skill.

Counter-con #1: Such runners could run a blindfolded category. I've toyed with the idea of this, could be fun.

Con #2: Viewers of a speedrun not familiar with the techniques might incorrectly believe the runner is actually seeing in the dark areas.

Counter-con #2: Who really cares if a viewer is more impressed then they should be. But to prevent this confusion, the description of the Any% category could explicitly say that monitor and device display settings may be modified by the runner.

Non-con: Note that changing the display device or monitor settings does not show up in the record of the video (at least, this is the case when I use OBS, standard recording equipment, etc.)

P.S. So far, I've played at night with the lights off and normal monitor brightness. As long as I let my eyes adjust I can see even in the dark zones pretty well. However, I did experience some eye strain after running so I am planning on increasing the gamma setting of my display device from now on.

After a discussion with becored and Shadax, it was agreed that adjusting monitor settings is allowed. This has been specified in the Any% rules.
