# May 2024 Anime Speedruns Update

There's a lot to go over this month as it's coming hot off of Anime Speedruns Festival 2024. We tried to go off of what was posted in the Discord server and came across the Anime Speedruns X feed! Tons of WR's were set this month, and like always there's a nonstop flow of new routing and information.

- Slayers for the Super Famicom which has had improved routing and a new world record set by @SecondPlace92.

- Beach: Heat the Soul - Full Category sweep in the game by @SWITERZ
- @GalaxyGod set a new PB and WR for Cardcaptor Sakura Tomoyo no Video Daisakusen live at ASF with a time of 7min 34seconds.
- @Katsushi1998 found a Soft Lock% glitch in Dolly Kanon 3DS
- Infamous_ was verified and passed @Oh_Snap to take the Kakarot WR: 3 hours 55min 24 seconds.
- In regards to major Dragon Ball Z news Buu's Fury, multiple prototype carts have surfaced after 20 long years of the game being released. Be sure to check out the information in the discord, research is being done on how this can potentially change the run.
- Date a Live has had a fan game that was found.
- Date a Live: Spirit has started to be run by @jensj56 with the current time sitting at 2min and 50 for Tohka Dead End.
- The Ashita no Joe series has been punched with love, with new records set in every game by @MaindeSinge. Most notably, In the PS2 game 1hr 36min 9secs and on the Super Famicom game 7mins and 40seconds.
- Black Clovers Quartet Knights Asta Any% had some history made, as @Platinum_mad overtook @Lgndv and took the first sub 13.
- Shin Chan and The Shiro of Coal Town have their leaderboards up now and @runasoru set the first run. This is a beautiful game, and even if you're not intending to run it might be a nice treat to watch if you have time. https://www.speedrun.com/Shin_Chan_and_The_Shiro_of_Coal_Town
- The coveted Doraemon (64) Nobita to Mittsu no Seireiseki board has a new record of 39m 32s in Any% and 47m 52s in 100% both set by @eji573 who has been on the speedrun grind!
- The One Piece is still real, One Piece Unlimited Cruise 2 @MMat has been setting new WR times across JP/PAL versions. This game has some really cool slide tech movement, I really suggest taking a look at it.
- One Piece GBA (Shonen Jump's One Piece) has been having additional level routing done by @Nighlin, this was shown off most recently at @MxBatty at ASF. This game has become more and more optimized over the past few months.
- One Piece Odyssey Crocodile% was set by @miggnuggets. Will more runners challenge this RPG?
- One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 WR was set live at Anime Speedruns Festival by @Nighlin, @GlodRoger has also been taking back records on Treasure Logs.
- One Piece Treasure Battle sees new world records which were set at the ASF host house after the event by co-op teams @FinalCrash and @Glitchedd and @Shrimp_Brain.
- Fate/Samurai Remnant continues to be updated, with the current DLC on NG+ @HarryMacDowell stands with the top time.
- Fate/Extella Link Had an Any% run uploaded by @Galactic_Star, with an IGT of 47 minutes, there might be a good chance we see more of this game and its endings filled out.
- The History of Granblue Fantasy Relink is being carved with @WAKARIX taking the WR for New Game+ in Granblue Fantasy: Relink,
- @pipipipi achieved a 3hour 12min 43 second time in Any% No DLC. There's no telling what the time will be at the end of the year with updates new updates and releases scheduled for the game.
- @Mageius has been putting work into Macross Shooting Insight with the current record sitting at 43:26. Along with pushing forward tech and bringing the game to everyone's eyes.
- @DBcade beat a 4-year standing record for Genki Bakuhatsu Ganbaruger. The new record is 5min 29seconds.
- @CwolfPilot got Zoids battle legends NG+ PB and WR of 44:25
- @Pdently got the first sub 5 in Toradoras mini-game mode.
- If you're looking for more cute games, the master of them @Katsushi1998 has uploaded a Story Mode NG+ run for Kirarin Revolution: Kirakira Idol Audition, The run is under an hour for both categories, and they are more than happy to help new runners out!
- JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R, has seen a huge push by @SigridoGaming and @gamebrain to drop time across all tournament and arcade modes. It seems to be a nice little rivalry of sorts!
- JoJo Bizarre Adventure for the Super Famicom has seen new tricks and smoother play, probably thanks to translation patches, so now overseas players like @brkmnly can show off their skills. They reduced the new any% time to 2h 28m and 1s.
- Inuyasha: Feudal Combat has been having a lot of theory crafting and discussion about routes, especially after ASF. Post your theories and even test them.
- Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked, a game directed by Goichi Suda, has seen some improved routing and exploitation of the game's final boss to give way for a record of 1h 43m 42s by @Glitchedd
- GetBackers games were explored by the community, with the beat 'em up standing out amongst them, GetBackers Dakkanya: Dakkandayo! Zenin Shuugou!! has a fun co-op run to check out with lots of potential routing.
- Hinamizawa Branch School Basketball Tournament has your anime sports gaming covered, with @Akira_RP setting a Normal Mode record at 10m 21s. When They Cry Series is definitely overlooked, so it's nice to see some more games being discovered.
- Hajime no Ippo is finally getting the recognition it deserves with @Hudson222 stepping up to challenge some of the times, with some interesting strats. This is definitely a game punch-out fans could dissect in a big way.
- Demon Slayer Sweep the Board continues having initial times set, with some times being taken by @xddbzfan869, and the Hashira level has begun to be set by @DBcade
- In the Digiverse, @HaloOfValor got routed the Boss Cup Record to a science and took WR at 1m 50 seconds in Digimon Racing.
- Digimon World has seen @Kyutora and other members return to practicing the game and pushing for PB's
- The slightly creepy GeGeGe no Kitaro game for PS1 has had some PB improvements in all major categories by @demodoriya. In particular, Niku Ningyou is now a 19:43 sub-20 time with optimal movement.
- @AdrianVG finally put up a time for the Blue Mountain category of BLOOD+ One Night Kiss. Meaning the whole game has a speedrun path if you wanted to try a hand at it.
- @TheLoniestCubone not only reexamined Shaman King: Power of Spirit but set the new record to 4 hours 18 minutes 28 seconds. Maybe we will see a sub 4 hour in this soon?!
- Zatch Bell Electric Arena, and Arena 2 (Unare! Yuujou no Zakeru 2) have been seeing the charge beam strat return through @Esteban300s attempts. The current World records sit safely under his name for now.
- Gundam is seeing a small revival, with @JorgeReevs_ix submitting a 12m 16s Hygog run, very hype!
- SD Gundam Battle Alliance has a new pilot @Shelter_42 submitting a world record time of 2h 16m
- Naruto Clash of the Ninja series of games has been seeing some heavy submissions and records set, probably due to lots of combo vids (Courtesy @HippoGNT4) and TAS's being released in the community. Runner @AutomatedAlligator has become the Hokage of Ninja Taisen.
- A first record was set @Teufel9000 in Sand Land, The game has a lot of searching and routing that still are ongoing. The community needs more routers and researchers
- @Norishige710 has been holding Jungle no Ouja Tar Chan for several years now. After the event he started trying to route the 100%, however after researching this feat has never actually been officially done, so it would technically be a world first if someone collected all acorns in all levels, or at least could create a road map to doing so.

This challenge is especially exciting, because we’ve worked with the developer on some extra content developed *specifically* for this speedrun challenge - more on that later. Here’s what you need to know:

## **Eligibility:**

Must own a legitimate copy of Athena Crisis

Open to players aged 18 and above worldwide, with the following exceptions: North Korea, Syria, Sudan, Cuba, and Venezuela.

## **Category:**

As this is a challenge for a pre-existing game, we will not be revealing the category until near the start of the challenge to avoid anyone starting too far ahead of time. That said, if you want to hop in a game and start learning the basics to prepare yourself - we encourage you to do so if you’d like!

## **Challenges**

In case you aren’t aware of what a challenge is in the context of Speedrun.com, a Challenge leaderboard functions similarly to the regular leaderboards you're already familiar with. However, we've made a few layout adjustments to cater to the time-sensitive nature of challenges and the inclusion of prize pools.

We always aim to avoid any undue pressure on the associated moderation team with whatever game is the focus of the challenge - so to ensure a smooth process, all runs submitted to the challenge leaderboard will be screened and verified by either SRC staff or Athena Crisis moderation team members *volunteering for the challenge specifically*. After the challenge concludes, SRC staff will collaborate with the Athena Crisis moderation team to discuss the potential merging of challenge runs into the regular leaderboard once the moratorium period expires, respecting the mod team's preferences.

Attention all turn-based strategy enjoyers and speedrunners from all genres! We are extremely excited to announce our $1000 Athena Crisis Speedrunning Challenge in collaboration with Nakazawa Tech & Null Games!

Athena Crisis $1000 Speedrun Challenge!

Summer Segments Scramble is returning to host the third ever Grand Theft Auto V speedrun tournament! This year, up to 32 speedrunners will be competing in one on one races in the six most popular and entertaining any% segments along with three of the most popular miscellaneous categories.

# Dates

The first races will take place on June 14th. Most races will take place on the following Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and the tournament is expected to conclude by August 18th. Exact race times will be announced on the GTA V speedrun server once they are scheduled.

# Prize Pool

Prize money consists entirely of donations from the GTA V speedrunning community over the course of the tournament. As of right now, a little over $900 has been raised so far. At the end of the tournament, prize money will be distributed as follows:

- First Place - 45.0%
- Second Place - 25.0%
- Third Place - 17.5%
- Fourth Place - 12.5%

# Eligibility

Signups for this tournament will be open to the public until June 8th at 9:59PM UTC. Anyone is welcome to sign up, but if the cap of 32 players is exceeded, the competition will be limited to the applicants with the best GTA V speedrun personal bests.

All races for this tournament will be streamed, so any competitors must be capable of maintaining a livestream with a reliable connection.

I also know that Jaxler was absolutely HYPING up this category to me at AGDQ earlier this year, and let me tell you that man is convincing. If you’re familiar with Elden Ring or Souls games in general you’ll know just how difficult they can be. Well, blanxz is a master - with world records in *6 different Souls* games (depending on your definition, but that's a whole can of worms lol.) Considering Glitchless does what looks to be most (maybe all?) of the mainline bosses in Elden Ring and yet the time estimate is under *90 minutes* - yeah I’m sure this will be a good time (no pun intended)

The last time Half-Life 2 (HL2) was shown at GDQ was just 2 years ago, and yet the World Record has dropped **MULTIPLE** minutes since then, and the community sum of best even further than that. HL2 has seriously gone through some major routing revelations in these last years and definitely deserves its spot on the games list. With 2 runners on stage/screen at the same time, that's just double the goodness being fed directly into my eyeballs and I’m here for it.

Okay so I’m 99% sure every single one of you reading this article has never even heard of this game - that’s okay! Let me break it down for you. You run into sloped objects, you go **NYOOM** up into the air. Gulch recently came in and absolutely tore BOTH of the NecroVisioN games apart, and I’m super excited to be seeing this hit the big stage.

This may be a controversial take, I don’t know - but this category is a true diamond in the rough for speedrunners who love glitches. The vanilla version of Outlast 2 will kill the player if any of the game's checkpoints are skipped, but for this category that’s no longer a concern - allowing for ALL KINDS of wacky glitches/skips to be used in the route. Not to mention this run will also be using the Cutscene Skip mod which removes the icky downtime in the run. I’m all for prioritizing entertainment over “purity” in speedrunning, and while using 2 mods might be non-traditional - it makes for a hell of a speedrun!

Spicee went on an absolute **TEAR** earlier this year, snatching first place in all 3 modern Tomb Raider games within 10 days and I’m so happy he’s able to show off one of them on the GDQ stage! TR2013 is yet another one for you glitch-hungry watchers, filled to the brim with lots of clipping through walls and walking on air - you know typical Lara Croft stuff right?

Pixel Perfect Events are kicking off our 2024 calendar with Pixel Perfect Marathon 4 (PPM4) on the weekend of 22nd-23rd June! Submissions are open to all runs and showcases. We want to spotlight races and co-op runs for PPM4, so submitting one will yield a higher chance of acceptance.

Pixel Perfect Events is a speedrunning and game showcase community. We're dedicated to hosting quality events that bring video game entertainers and lovers from all backgrounds together to celebrate the video games we love, and the feats we love to show off!

Our team shares many years of organizing experience across various marathon communities. As such we've developed our own in house tools to provide runners with a slick and simple setup with sub-second latency streams, tools for volunteers of every experience, and viewers with a high quality stream they'll love watching.

PPM4 marks our final marathon that's just for fun. Whilst we've loved having the opportunity to give our runners and volunteers a marathon free from not having to focus on donations and targets, we're now preparing to have the organisation officially recognised to raise money for charity in future events.

500 characters to describe your game and 300 characters for each category doesn’t leave much space to discuss why your run is cool, what motivated you to submit it, or the community around it. So we’re asking some extra questions for you to recommend your favorite and shout out your community. Write your heart out or keep it simple - we look forward to your answers!

### Volunteers

The exact timing of the marathon will depend on the submissions and volunteers. We can start on Friday, or even run for 24 hours if we have your help! 

For tech, this will be our first event using our final NodeCG experience that can fully control OBS (to the extent we need) from a remote browser. That means our tech volunteers will have access to scenes, audio, and live views of the OBS Preview and Program, **all from one browser page!** We can’t wait to see how our PPM4 tech crew get on with the system - we’re pretty confident it’ll be one of the easiest models out there! Hosts get access to this as well so they have some control over the stream, mainly the changing between intermission and runs, and controlling the on-screen timer. We feel it's important that hosts actually take some control, it's your moment to shine, so take charge of it!

**Who is allowed to be a performer in this event?**

✨ All women are welcome, whether you're cis, trans, non-binary, or part of a marginalized group! As long as you welcome the label of Lady Arcader, you are welcome! You must be a part of the Lady Arcaders private server.

**Do I have to speedrun?**

✨Nope! We welcome all sorts of showcases at different skill levels! We want to see unconventional stuff!

**Do I have to have a top time or leaderboard entry to submit my speedrun?**

✨ Absolutely not! We welcome all sorts of showcases at different skill levels!

**Am I allowed to have non-women commentators on my showcase?**

✨ Yes! You can. They must abide by our guidelines.

**I don't have a commentator, can I request a commentary buddy?**

We're excited for our next challenge as part of our SRC Series! If you don’t know, the SRC Series is a lineup of challenges we're rolling out on a semi-regular basis, funded entirely by Speedrun.com. SRC Series challenges are designed to be fun and engaging, with a focus on community involvement. The prize bounties are smaller compared to sponsored challenges, providing a break from the stress of high-stakes competition! We hope SRC Series challenges will continue to bring speedrunners together from all kinds of communities to discover new games and meet new people.

For our next challenge, we've selected **Poppy Playtime**! If you're unfamiliar, Poppy Playtime is a Puzzle Horror currently in development (with 3 chapters available) by Mob Entertainment.

Here’s everything you’ll want to know heading into the challenge:

**Starting Date:** April 14th, 2024

**Duration:** 10 days, until 11:59PM UTC April 24th, 2024

## **Prize Distribution:**

The $500 prize pool will be distributed among the top performers for fastest completion time in the Any% category. The distribution is as follows:

**1st place** - $250

**2nd place** - $150

**3rd place** - $100

## **Participation Prizes:**

We are bringing back participation prizes for the second challenge in a row!

First of all, any runner who submits any runs to the Poppy Playtime challenge will receive **one month** of SRC Supporter, if you haven’t heard of Supporter before you may learn more about it [here](https://www.speedrun.com/supporter)!

Secondly, any challenge participants will be awarded with the title **PLAYTOY**. SRC Series: Poppy Playtime Duo Speedrun Challenge

To celebrate Affray's [173-B Plushie campaign with Makeship](https://www.makeship.com/products/scp-173-plush), Affray Interactive will be holding a SCP: 5K Speedrun Competition.



## Game

SCP: 5K is a cooperative tactical horror shooter project that puts players in the midst of a story inspired by SCP-5000 by Tanhony. Formally known as SCP: Pandemic, 5K is in early access and is developed by Affray Interactive. 



### Prizes:

Consists of a prize pool of $300 cash: $200 from Affray, $100 from the SCP Speedrunning community. Affray is also giving out SCP: 5K-themed prizes for the winning contestant.

1. 1st Place: $150 USD, the original SCP-173-B Plushie prototype, and an Area-12 crate 
2. 2nd Place: $100 USD
3. 3rd Place: $25 USD 
4. 4th Place: $25 USD



# **Contest Details**

To participate, play a speedrun of the current 0.13 version of SCP: 5K; you'll need to complete a run in the Area-12 category with a fire team of 4 players to qualify. Make sure to record your run on YouTube or on Twitch. Once completed, upload the video or link the video(s) of your run and post the URL on speedrun.com for verification. All runs will need to abide by the SRC rules.

## Duration/Competition Format

The group with the fastest completion time will advance to the semi-finals. In the semifinals, the winning 4-man fire team, will split up into two teams and complete Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of Area-12 and whichever team has the shortest run will reach the finals. 

In the finals, the two finalists will compete in the Outpost Axiom category to achieve the fastest completion time and determine the plush speedrunning winner. 

Phase 1 (Preliminaries): April 8th - April 12th

Phase 2 (Semifinals): April 13th - April 14th

Phase 3 (Finals): April 15th - 17th.

## Eligibility

Once again hosted at the Adelaide Rockford in Adelaide, South Australia, the marathon will be running non-stop for 6 whole days from **July 16th - 21st** to bring you over 120 hours of speedrunning content while raising money for Game On Cancer!
